According to the consulting firm Deloitte, in 2009 just 10% of consumers subscribed to internet video services. Recently, a new 2019 study reported 69% of consumers pay for some type of internet video streaming service, while only 65% of consumers pay for traditional TV services. The rise of popularity in streaming services would have used to been credited to Netflix, or Hulu. However, now it’s “Disney+”. For me personally, don’t believe I support the fox acquisition. I believe it takes away a lot of opportunity, and diversity from a lot of other television services. Disney was called “the movie studio that ate another movie studio”, and I couldn’t agree more with this.
Owen Gleiberman says in “Why Is Everyone So Scared of Disney?”, “It’s not just, or maybe even primarily, the size of the company that is giving people the shakes. It’s the fact that a single film corporation now seems to own everything worth having — at least, in stark capitalistic blockbuster terms.” And it is just so true. Disney owns everything big audiences like, for example: Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar. Netflix still has good options but it’s starting to fall behind. Though I have heard they have thought about merging with Nickelodeon. I’m starting to wonder if this would make Netflix a huge competitor with Disney+? I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Potter says in our textbook how media outlets have found ways to appeal to mass “niche audiences”. At one time, I could’ve considered the Disney franchise to have a mass following to their products specifically. While I agree with Potter, I think Disney+ has become too powerful and applies to almost every niche audience. While this sounds very convenient to have everything in one place, it pushes a lot of other people out of the way. If Disney had the power to win Fox over, who’s to say Disney won’t try to buy comcast next?
This makes me think of an important question: Will traditional, old-fashioned cable TV ever make a comeback? Unfortunately for some, I’m thinking the answer is” no”. If more and more popular and critically acclaimed content appears to be on streaming services, they’ll stay in the lead. According to Chris Brantner, Apple is expected to release a massive-budget service of their own. Could it be too much? Or maybe, there will become too many choices and people will be driven back to old cable television.
In conclusion, I am a supporter and user of Disney+ but I do not think it is a good move for the media market. Like we once saw with Nintendo, Disney+ may not think they are doing harm, but they are. They are taking away options for other streaming services to market themselves on the same accredited platform. I’m seeing it happen right in front of my eyes, the good shows on Netflix are being taken off and being put on Disney+ or Hulu. I’m now subscribed to all of them. Sure would nice to have them all in one place for one price, huh?
